Work Of The Humane Society Of The United States.
Most people have a perception of the humane society of the united states as being an organization that has many animals which are waiting for people to adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
There are thousands of animal species in the world. The HSUS work is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. HSUS does not only work in the U.S but has extended globally with some of its missions being to rescue sea animals. Racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research are some of the activities that rescued animals have been involved in. The activities that the animals are involved are many and these are some of them.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has also been in the forefront in pushing for pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. It is the aim of the organization that through the legislation animal cruelty will be dealt with. When disasters such as the Katrina have occurred, animals are always affected. When such incidences happen, the HSUS is always ready to send a team which will be involved in the rescue of animals. HSU also has a program of educating backyard owners of how to coexist with backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice, and raccoons.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. It was the first organization of its kind in the U.S. Subsequently, more organizations came up. In a delegates meeting held by the various animal rights organizations in 1887, there was an agreement that all the organizations should be collapsed to for the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. Many laws in the U.S have passed. The various laws includes those that are against mistreatment of animals to those that protect the endangered species, learn more here.
